Verification of flood numerical simulation by small-scale laboratory experiments
Tokuzou@HOSOYAMADA

In Japan, the flood disasters caused by the abrupt downpour occur very frequently in these years. The rainfall sometimes exceeds capacity of flood control facilities, which cause devastating disaster problems. Numerical simulation of flood flows might mitigate the disaster. However, validity of the numerical results is very difficult to be verified due to difficulty in acquisition of time-dependent real field data.

In this research, the numerical results for flood numerical simulation were verified by a small-scale laboratory experiments. Image processing technique is used to get the velocity and water depth distributions which are developing temporally. The comparison between numerical and experimental results show that flood developing speed for both results agree well, velocities also agree qualitatively, however numerical velocity tend to be larger than experimental velocities.
