Experimental and Numerical Study for Behavior of Density Driven Intrusion Currents

Tokuzou HOSOYAMADA

The murky waters harm environments in dam reservoir especially in case of heavy rain. When the reservoir has strong density stratification, the murky water generates density intrusion currents. Understanding the phenomena is important for environmental management of the dam reservoir.
In this research, the intrusive density current was examined in by a series of laboratory experiments. Numerical study was also carried out to study temporal change of velocity, density distribution and pressure in detail. Both laboratory and experimental results show agreement. Change of thickness of the gravity head and the intrusion celerity for change of internal Frude Number has same tendency for laboratory experiments and numerical study.
