Fundamental study on property changes of modified binders and modified asphalt concretes focusing aging degradation

Teruhiko@MARUYAMA

In this study, chemical and physical properties of new and aged asphalt binders were investigated. Physical properties of the asphalt concrete treated with the accelerative aging degradation were also evaluated. The results on modified binder were compared with those on straight asphalt to evaluate the difference of the binder characteristics. This study focused on aging degradation in particular. Aging characteristic of the modified binder and the modified asphalt concrete were clarified from various evaluation tests. The remarkable findings in the study are as follows.
1) As for the composition of chemical elements, consistency and elastic characteristic, the properties of modified binder are hard to change even if aging degradation is treated. The temperature susceptibility is also low. These advantages are due to the effect of SBS. Because of these, the declination of strength and durability on the modified asphalt concrete is low, if the temperature gets high and the aging degradation progresses. Namely, the durability of the modified asphalt concrete is excellent in a field for a long term.
2) It is expected that G* and tan in the DSR test and penetration index, PI, are effective to evaluate not only chemical and physical properties of the modified binder but also physical properties of the modified asphalt concrete.
