Preparation of silicate binary glasses by pulse electric@current sintering of the gel powder

Kazumasa MATUSITA

Preparation of glasses with new functions has been tried at low temperature by sol-gel process.
It is however difficult to obtain monolithic glasses because of cracking during drying and heating.
In this study, it was tried to prepare the ZrO2-SiO2Aand TiO2-SiO2 monolithic glasses from sol-gel powder by PECS
In both compositions, densely sintered bodies were obtained and even transparent bodies were obtained depending on composition.
However, in ZrO2-SiO2 , crystalline phases are observed from all compositions by XRD.
While, in TiO2-SiO2, the composition containing of 5 mol%TiO2 is vitrified.
Possibillity of glass preparation was discussed based on the comparison of sintering and crystal growing behaviors of the present study with those of conventional method.
