Numerical Simulation of Channel Flow in Kariyata River by Flood Disaster on 13th July 2004

Yusuke FUKUSHIMA

Heavy rainfall caused by a baiu-front (stationary front) occurred in Niigata prefecture from July 12 to 13, 2004. In Tochio city, Niigata, an hourly precipitation of 58 mm was recorded on July 13, with the total precipitation in a 48-hour period up to 427 mm. During this heavy rainfall, 16 persons were killed, 476 houses were destroyed, and about 13,500 houses were inundated. Eleven levee destruction occurred in class-A rivers, causing serious inundation damage in Niigata prefecture. Most of the inundation damage occurred in Sanjo city, Mitsuke city, and Nakanoshima town. The numerical simulation of the channel flow in Kariyata river is carried out. The results of the numerical simulation are compared with the water level at two gauging stations. Agreement between the numerical results and observations is fairy well.
