Study on fatigue characteristics and the fatigue life prediction for modified asphalt concretes

Teruhiko MARUYAMA

In this study, the following laboratory test was experimented to evaluate fatigue characteristics of modified asphalt include aging effect. Cyclic bending tests, penetration tests, softening point tests, and ductility tests. The fatigue life of asphalt concrete that used straight asphalt or modified asphalt was predicted by comparing fatigue characteristics and result of field data analysis. The fatigue life was predicted by estimating the accumulated damage, which can be calculated by using Miner rule.
The findings from the study are as follows.
1. Asphalt concreteG
The fatigue failure resistances of asphalt concrete with modified binder are higher than that of straight asphalt binder.
2. BinderG
The durability of modified binder is higher than that of straight asphalt binder.
3. fatigue lifeG
The fatigue life of asphalt concrete with straight asphalt and modified asphalt were predicted using several measured data of the real pavement. Under all the testing conditions, the fatigue life of asphalt concrete with modified asphalt is longer than that of straight asphalt.
