A Study on Transportation Energy of Truck and City Characteristics

Kazushi SANO

This study has paid attention to the relation between the transportation energy of truck and the city characteristics, there analyzed the factors influencing the transportation energy of trucks.
The multi-linear regression technique has been applied for 70 independent cities. Not only a statistical city index but also a distribution of zoning area measured by GIS software were used for explanatory variables. The result of the multi linear regression analysis shows that the index of extension and the population accumulation of the city played a key role and the R-square of the energy consumption estimation model was more than 0.9. Therefore, the policies retraining the urban expansion or encouraging concentration of the population to the center part decrease the trip length of trucks. Those policies are also efficient to solve not only urban problems but also environmental ones. The fact that the sale volume of wholesalers was the significant variable shows that the improvement of efficiency of distribution does not decrease only logistic cost but also the energy consumption.
