Study on Diagonal Tensile Strength of Form Composite Light-weight Soil

Takaya KAINO

Diagonal tensile strength of Form Composite Light-weight Soil (abbr. FCL) is important factor for design of FCL embankment because it is an index for earthquake resistant. In this study, for the purpose of making the diagonal tensile strength clear I did pure shear test (uniform shear stress in a test piece) on many rectangular test pieces by means of direct shear apparatus reconstructed the shear box part. In addition, I did needle penetration tests with unconfined compressive tests to estimate the unconfined compressive strength of the broken pieces by pure shear test. The followings are the main results that obtained in this study.

(1)As a result of the needle penetration test, it can estimate unconfined compressive strength of FCL accurately by point resistance and frictional resistance of needle.

(2)As a result of the pure shear test, it is observed that diagonal tensile strength of FCL is 1/5 to 1/7 of unconfined compressive strength.
