The Research on the Long Term Performance of Recycled Asphalt Mixtures

Teruhiko MARUYAMA

Recycled asphalt mixtures are used in road pavements in the same way as virgin materials. However, long term performances of recycled mixtures and effect of additives for recycling have not been cleared.
In this study, various asphalt mixtures were prepared in different contents of recycled asphalt mixtures and were exposed in outdoor environment. The relationships between their long term performances and recycled asphalt mixture contents are investigated as being compared with properties of virgin mixtures. Penetration tests, R&B softening point tests, static bending tests, dynamic fatigue tests and Cantabro tests were carried out for these mixtures at appointed exposed periods.
From the evaluation tests for the specimens exposed for 48 months, it can be concluded that recycled asphalt mixtures with appropriate amount of additives can be treated equally as virgin mixtures.
