Experimental study on design rate for fine aggregate in the Large Grain Size Asphalt Mixture

Osamu Takahashi

In this research aggregate design of Large Grain Size Asphalt Mixture that have No. 4 aggregate of the 30mm as the maximum grain is discussed to improve, rutting resistance. Large Grain Size Asphalt Mixture has high interlocking effect with coarse aggregate. From past research, it was know that the following two combinations are appropriate in order to acquire a good interlocking effect of coarse aggregate;
EDesign of No. 4 aggregate and No. 7 aggregate, and
EDesign of No. 4 aggregate and No. 6 aggregate
In this study, the optimal design rate of fine aggregate was determined in accordance with the rate of coarse aggregate and the rate of filling. It was discussed not to break down the frame structure of the coarse aggregate. Gyratory Compactor was used in the investigation of design. Design rate of fine aggregate was determined by filling air voids of No.7 or No.6 with fine aggregate in order of large size. It is known that air voids are getting the minimum in the combination of the coarse aggregates. The rational procedure of mix design for the Large Stone Asphalt Mixture, which has excellent rutting resistance, was shown.
