Investigation of Viscous Flow Mechanism Considering Free Volume Theory in Molten Silicate Glass
Kazumasa Matusita
Since glass manufacture is energy consuming process, efficiency improvement is necessary. Therefore, it is important to understand the properties and structure of molten glass. However, few studies have been reported on basic properties of glass melt such as density. In this studyC density of molten soda-lime-silicate glasses was measured by using Archimedes two-sphere method and the relation with viscosity was analyzed, which is also important for the melt state. We discussed viscous flow mechanism based on free volume theory. It is concluded that the viscosity can be expressed by free volume theory over wide temperature range from above liquidus temperature to far below Tg.
