Study on Foam Composition Light-weight Soil Mixed with Wood Chips

Takaya KAINO

Wood chips made in manufacturing process of pencils become Industrial waste. This study aims to utilize them effectively mixed into Foam Composite Light-weight Soil (abbr. FCL). I examined quality characteristic and strength characteristic of FCL mixed with wood chips. And I studied it's practicality. The main results found from this study are as follows.

(1) The strength of FCL decreased by mixing wood chips. It was considered to be caused by the humic acid contained in wood chips. I investigated the quantity of the humic acid contained in wood chips by test for organic impurities. As a result, it became clearly that wood chips are not able to use mixing in concrete.

(2) Tough lock-4 type (abbr. TL-4) is a strong solidification material effective for an organic substance. I used TL-4 as the countermeasure of humic acid. As a result, the influence of humic acid could be reduced. It was effective to mix a wood chips into FCL, if the water-cement ratio was 1.65 or more. And, the lightness nature and reinforcing effect were held. However, the liquidity decreased.
