Study on Bending Strength of Foam Composite Light-weight Soil

Takaya KAINO

It is usual for design of Foam Composite Light-weight Soil (abbr. FCL) banking to use (unconfined) compressive strength. FCL banking is acted bending tensile strength in the center part of the bottom according to computation.

However , we won't find the paper concerning the properties of bend ,and tension about FCL. In this study , I produced some types of beam models and I did the bending test. In this connection , I changed condition on beam models about bending shear span ratio and scale effect. And I did the tensile test at the same time, because tensile strength is also important factor for design of FCL banking like a bending strength.

The followings are the main results obtained in this study.

1) It is verified that bending strength and tensile strength increase when compressive strength increases.
2) It is observed that change of scale effect influences on bending strength but it is not observed clearly influence by change of bending shear span ratio.
3) From two correlations between compressive strength and bending strength and tensile strength it is observed that tensile strength of FCL is weak about 1/2 of bending strength.
